Heroes is terrible… bordering on unwatchable. I am, however, pleasantly surprised by the new Microsoft campaign that premiered tonight: “I’m a PC.”

As a recent MAC convert I must say that these ads evoked a bit of nostalgia for the forgone days of my life as a PC user, and also because I hate hipsters. It’s about time that Microsoft fired back, and they did it in what I think is a very effective way.

September 23rd, 2008 @ 4:21 pmWhile I whole heartedly agree with you on the hipster front, I think the main issue I have, and that others will instinctually realize is that this is a marketing campaign. This is all a venire. At the end of the day, Microsoft (thought not the entertainment division) doesn’t stand for fun, friendly, devoted to the arts or music or design. Nor do they have to be. They’re playing off brand here and worse, they’re playing on Apples turf.
For this campaign to have a ring of truth to it, there would have had to have been a fundamental shift in what motivates Microsoft, and I don’t think there has been. Whats sad, is that there are parts of the MS that ARE actually embodying this: the entertainment group, the surface group. These are the people doing the work that will hopefully someday be what MS stands for.
As a side note: both of those groups also make their own hardware, I think thats key.
